Desk space is a limited and precious resource for many people, and any space-saving measure that can free up a few inches can make a big difference. The Corsair K63 Wireless accomplishes this by cutting off the numpad that characterizes full-sized keyboards, and while those extra keys can come in handy, for many people they are little more than dust collectors. It’s generally well rounded, though a bit on the tall side, and the 2.4GHz wireless connection is not the most consistent. However, on the whole, this is a compelling keyboard for anyone who wants to save a bit of space on their desk while not compromising on performance
Design: Tough and compact
The Corsair K63 Wireless may be petite, but if anything, it outweighs many larger keyboards. The heft is satisfying, makes it feel really tough and durable, and means that it’s less likely to slide around on your desk. However, it does mean that it will add to the weight of your bag if you plan on carrying it around with you. Durability and overall build quality seem to be truly top-notch with the K63 wireless. From the mechanical keys to the sturdy frame, this keyboard feels like it could really take a hit. The textured detachable wrist rest and spacebar accentuate this rugged aesthetic, which is clearly more than skin deep. Though I would have preferred a volume wheel rather than buttons, the dedicated media controls are greatly appreciated here as on any keyboard. You also get a windows key lock button which is a nice feature for gamers and a backlight toggle button. Foldout legs allow you to adjust the angle of the keyboard. An optional accessory worth noting is the Corsair K63 Wireless Gaming Lapboard into which the keyboard is designed to dock, and which features an expansive mouse pad and cushy wrist rest. This combo makes the K63 wireless a compelling option for PC gaming in the living room.
Performance: Fast, but with connectivity issues
The Corsair K63 offers a fast and fluid typing experience that is remarkably responsive and satisfying. It features Cherry MX Red key switches that are light and responsive, while also being relatively quiet for mechanical keys. The K63 Wireless features 100% anti-ghosting, with full key rollover to ensure accurately recorded key presses. Regarding connectivity, the picture isn’t quite so rosy. While in use, the wireless connection to the keyboard was robust, but I did experience an issue where the 2.4GHz connection sometimes refused to reestablish itself after the keyboard woke from sleep mode. Every time I came back to my PC, I had to reset the wireless adapter by unplugging it and plugging it back in again. Fortunately, if you encounter this problem, the K63 also supports Bluetooth and a wired USB connection. Another bonus is the advantage of excellent battery life, as the K63 Wireless is capable of 15 hours of continuous use.
Comfort: On the tall side
The K63 is decent enough when it comes to comfort, but it’s a bit tall for my taste and the wrist rest isn’t substantial enough to compensate. It’s by no means a bad experience, but the k63 may not be the right ergonomic choice for everyone.
Software: Useful features
Though Corsair’s iCue software isn’t as useful when paired with a keyboard like the K63 wireless that doesn’t feature customizable RGB, the software is well designed and allows you to alter various settings in the keyboard. You can have the backlighting perform different animations (though I preferred to keep it solid), and it can be used to set custom macros.
Price: Good value
With an MSRP of $110, the K63 Wireless offers decent value for money. Though it’s certainly not cheap, the combination of robust build quality, wireless capability, and mechanical key switches is compelling at this price point.
Corsair K63 Wireless vs. Steelseries Apex 3
If you don’t mind giving up the wireless connection and smaller form factor of the Corsair K63 Wireless, the Steelseries Apex 3 is an excellent gaming keyboard at less than half the price of the K63. The Apex 3 features IP32 water resistance and gorgeous backlighting, and while it technically uses membrane key switches, they feel almost as good to type on as the mechanical switches in the K63.
